Recruiting Update 12Mar

Mar 12

James Wilder, Jr. looking seriously ay UGA:

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Wilder supposedly is still growing and could play running back, linebacker or defensive end in college. The

Orlando Sentinel's Bill Buchalter actually named him the top defensive end in Florida. Colleges are leaving what position he'll play to Wilder, who says he prefers running back. Because of his versatility Wilder is an early favorite to be tabbed the No. 1 prospect in the country for 2011. «I haven't seen everybody yet, but Wilder is going to be tough to beat, because he's so good on offense and defense,» CBS College Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming told the South Bend Tribune.

Top linemen prospects:

Brandon Shell of Goose Creek, S.C., one of Georgia's priorities as an offensive line prospect, plans to make UGA one of his stops on a recruiting tour during his spring break, according to The State's Phil Kornblut. His other stops will be Clemson, South Carolina and Alabama. Shell is the nephew of former NFL executive and former player and coach Art Shell. . . . After center David Andrews, who has already committed to the Bulldogs, Georgia's top O-line targets are Shell, Watts Dantzler of Dalton, Xzavier Ward of Moultrie and Antonio Richardson of Nashville.

Xzavier Ward mentions Georgia and Alabama as his top 2(Scout$$$):

«I like Georgia and Alabama, but I am looking at everyone. I don't think I will make my decision until after my senior season, but I guess it could be earlier. I am not totally sure when it will be, but I know I am not close to being ready right now.» «I visited Georgia first for their Junior Day in January and it is really nice up there. I went to a game there in the fall and I loved up there. I really like the college, I like the Georgia tradition, and they told me I could be a big asset to the team at offensive tackle.»

The time when he really starts to evaluate schools and narrow his list down is likely not to be any time soon. The 6-foot-7, 255 pound tackle out of Moultrie (GA) Colquitt County is in no hurry to make a decision.

Freshman linebacker Reuben Foster of LaGrange attracting attention of both Georgia and Bama:
Profile: Reuben Foster

Location: LaGrange, Ga.
High School: Troup County
Class: 2013
Position: Linebacker
Size: 6-0/202

Recruiting: Alabama and Georgia have both communicated to Foster through his coach that he has a spot at their schools in 2013. Foster will become a national recruit if he continues to play and progress like he did as a freshman. He is one of the top linebackers in Georgia right now.

Zach Witchett says Georgia and Alabama are neck and neck. Bama has not offered. He is also talking about Tennessee and Miami. Even though he is a friend of Brandon Boykin, he is not a lock for UGA. (Scout$$$)

Quan Bray is not an Alabama lean:

Bray is mentioned as a strong Alabama lean on a lot of recruiting message boards and chatrooms. He said he's not sure where that's coming from.

«That's just people making assumptions,» Bray said. «You know how people get sometimes. I've got a couple of friends at Alabama. I have friends at Georgia, too. I'm going to take all my visits and see what's best for me.»

Westlake High cotinues to produce Div. 1 talent (Scout$$$):

Charles Purnell, Carnell Boyd, and Quinteze Williams are will be Division I recruits in the class of 2012 and Shaquille Wiggins is one to watch in the class of 2014 that is headed for Westlake next year.

2013 QB's at NUC (Scout$$$):

Leading the way there was Spencer McManes. He is a 6-foot-2, 188 pound freshman out of Roswell (GA) Blessed Trinity and he throws a nice ball. He threw the ball with a lot of control, he threw a nice tight spiral, and he showed consistent accuracy.

Mike Payne out of Doughtery is another one to watch. He was not quite as smooth as McManes with his delivery as he threw from over the top, but the ball really came out of his hand with a lot of velocity – sometimes too much. His size is not like McManes' either as he is a tad under 6-feet, but he is still only a freshman. He has to work on his mechanics and become more consistent, but he has a lot of tools to work with and he and McManes were named Co-MVP at the top quarterback position.

Creekside's next star (Scout$$$):

It is going to be Josh Holsey in the class of 2012.

Holsey is an athlete that is physical and he plays with a lot of confidence. He is a corner that plays more like a safety right now. He has very good make-up speed and he is good at jamming the receiver at the line of scrimmage, but he needs to stay lower in his back pedal and work on coming out of his breaks better.

Others:

J.L. Mann sophomore wide receiver Samson Baldwin was the top overall wide receiver on Saturday. He is built more like an inside receiver, but he had success both inside and outside in this event. He will be a Division I recruit in the class of 2012.

Stephenson's Jarontay Jones is next in line to be the top defensive line recruit for the Jaguars. He is long and lean so he will still need to add weight, but he has a good first step off the ball at defensive end and ended up walking away as the MVP at his position. He is getting early interest from Auburn, Georgia, and a number of other schools.
