Ucheedawg is optimistic about the secondary for 2010:

JHamilton

Jakar Hamilton

I'm excited about the corner position, but I'm confident in the safety spot. Bacarri. Rambo. Need I say more? He's already solidified his place in the hearts of UGA fans, and he's emerging as a true leader on the team. Plus, he brings a confidence and swagger to a unit where we as Dawgs have come to expect big plays and bigger hits. I can't wait to see him in action this year. He will be the anchor to this unit. Playing alongside him will likely be a number of folks, including Jakar Hamilton, Quinton Banks, and Nick Williams, who is making the move back to safety. Not to mention our super fresh- young Mr. Ogletree, who has a chance to come in and have immediate impact.

Buck Belue looks at the new defense:

It's embarrassing to see the lack of production in this area last season. The 'Dogs were dead last in forced fumbles with 2. The top teams had 10-plus. The interception total was embarrassing too. The Bulldogs had only 8 picks...the top teams had more than TWICE that number. So, the 'Dogs only forced 10 turnovers last year and the best SEC defenses produced 23-plus.

Bill Parcells' 4 rules in evaluating a QB for the NFL draft:

  1. He must be a senior, because you need time and maturity to develop into a good professional quarterback.
  2. He must be a graduate, because you want someone who takes his responsibilities seriously.
  3. He must be a three-year starter, because you need to make sure his success wasn't ephemeral and that he has lived as «the guy» for some period of time.
  4. He must have at least 23 wins, because the big passing numbers must come in the context of winning games.

More speculation about CMT on the hot seat:

I don't think Richt has anything to worry about as long as the team shows progress heading into the 2011 season. They won't have to be in a BCS game this year to do that, nor do I think they're expected to be in one outside the locker room. They are, however, expected to show signs of life again, especially on defense, against the rest of the SEC East. The old saying goes, «You have to beat the teams you're expected to beat.» They have to beat Vandy, Kentucky and Tennessee. That leaves Florida and South Carolina. They play Florida on neutral ground and play the Gamecocks in Columbia. By beating one, they put themselves in position to win the SEC East, by beating both they will take it outright, and will likely have a BCS bowl berth regardless of the SEC title game outcome.

No disrespect to Ucheedawg, but I have to say Rambo isn't as good as he and many others have implied. Not that I'm not excited about Rambo and the potential of the secondary. Quite the contrary. In fact, AFAIK I was the first poster on the web to point out that Rambo should start because he was the best safety we had.

But he's not there yet. Rambo did make progress last year, but he still has a long, long way to go before he is a really good safety. Certainly, Rambo's athletic ability and instinct for the game was a tremendous contrast to the other safeties we had on the field, who thankfully are no longer with us. I suspect that's why people have put Rambo ahead of where he actually is.

The same goes for the secondary. There's a lot to be excited about, and with these coaches it'll be no surprise if we come out of the gate playing well. But Rambo hasn't arrived yet, and neither has the secondary.
