Travis Jones?

Tjones

dawgsonline: UGA hires LB coach Warren Belin of Vandy to round out staff. Great hire - if Vandy is known for 1 thing it's been solid LB play. (2 minutes ago)

Update from Twitter - BernieDawg: Vandy's LB coach and RC has joined CMRs staff, per Rivals. (5 seconds ago) 4:56

I have been reluctant to speculate publicly that Travis Jones could the last cog in the new defensive coaching machine at UGA. At the NSD event Wednesday several attendees mentioned different candidates for the job - none named Travis Jones. When asked if they thought Jones might be the man they all allowed that they hoped so but doubted he would be named. There were several reasons for the pessimism:

  1. Georgia can't afford Travis Jones. One gentleman said that Jones is to make $500k next year with NO and in the wake of the already escalating salaries on the staff there is not enough money in the budget.
  2. Another version of the same argument is that adding Jones at an NFL salary level would send a salary escalation wave through the program that would capsize the fiscal ship.
  3. I also heard that Jones is not a candidate and that the delay in naming the last staffer is due to CMR's reluctance to hire someone in the middle of recruiting season.

Coach Richt had no problem with hiring Coach Lakatos during recruiting season. I understand that the Lakatos hiring was far enough ahead of signing day that no UConn prospect would get «Urban-ed» but there is no reason that another coach could not have been brought aboard at about the same time.

I just don't get the poverty arguments. We're talking SEC money here. The new TV contract is bringing in enough cash to handle any commitment that CMR might like - plus adjusting the existing salaries into line with the new. The athletic director just got his adjustment.

None of these arguments make sense to me. I think the wait is for Travis Jones. So does Bernie and he is always usually right.

What exactly would Travis Jones be coaching? Just wondering? GO DAWGS!

Although Jones is D-line coach for the Saints, he coached outside linbackers and D-ends for the Dolphins. An outside backer/ends coach is supposed to be exactly what UGA is looking for.

Travis will be named on Wedensday as the final cog to the staff. He notified coach Ritch his wanting to come back to UGA while they were courting KS. He will come for less money.

That is really good news. That announcement should lift spirits in DawgNation.

I'd like to see it happen and hope I eat my words, but I think it's another case of wishful thinking a la Kirby Smart. Maybe he's a little more apt to make the move because it's his alma mater, but I don't think the lure is as great as some would like to think. That's especially true when you are already in a very good situation(Smart with the BCS champ and Jones potentially with the Super Bowl champ). To make a move from the NFL to college, why do it to be a position coach and, whatever you think of our athletic department's money situation, it won't last long if they don't spend it wisely...and paying a position coach $500k or so would definitely be seen as irresponsible by some after what we laid out for Grantham. Those two guys would be making more than the rest of the staff combined....how long before we have to give some of the offensive coaches and Garner big raises too? It could very easily spiral completely out of control in an effort to keep the staff in tact over the next year or two(assuming they're successful).

You are right that bring in highly paid pros will caused salary inflation in the existing staff. I contend that the salary escalation will happen anyway due to the competition for coaches in the SEC and the new money available. The question is when the offensive coaches and Garner get paid, not if. UGA can make coaches salaries competitive or (if they are in demand) other schools will. You mentioned Kirby Smart. Look at his salary change. How will that affect Bama? TV money is pouring into the SEC. One of the few places to invest and improve the product is coaching. UGA's OC will be making $750k soon. Is Bobo worth it?
