Dawg Sports has the story of Lonnie Outlaw becoming a Dawg
With any luck, Lonnie Outlaw will reopen the pipeline from Wilcox County to the Classic City, not just for Nick Marshall next year, but also for Outlaw's younger brother, Jonathan «Bug» Howard. Although he is just a freshman, Howard is a three-sport athlete who already stands about 6'2» and distinguished himself with a terrific catch for the Patriots in the first half of the state championship game last fall.
Coach Grantham is looking forward the Mike Thornton's arrival
Todd Grantham sees Thornton — who's 6-foot-2, 280 pounds — as a tackle in his 3-4 defense. «He's a 1-gap guy,» Grantham said Wednesday. «What we're looking for with our defensive tackles is quickness and suddenness and the ability to get off the ball and deliver a blow.»
If you go simply by the average number of stars for a class, Georgia scored a 3.47 -- the second-highest total in the SEC and the ninth-best mark overall. Figure that the odds of a highly regarded recruit panning out in college are better than a lower-tier guy, and it's certainly quite possible that, despite a lower ranking overall, the impact of this class will be as good as any in the SEC (with the possible exception of the ridiculous haul Florida came up with).
Speaking of recruiting - Central Florida snagged the redundantly named Jose Jose
UGABlog expresses my felings on the class
So, we ended up not getting as highly ranked of a recruiting class as we have been used to. I say, WHO CARES? We're still the Dawgs, we have a TON of talent coming back next year, and we got EXACTLY what we needed.
The Grit Tree says essentially the same thing as other rational observers
We'll have a very solid squad to build off of moving forward and are in a great position for the 2010 season. Yes, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and UT all had good classes, but of those, only Florida and Bama really blew us out of the water. Auburn's class is inflated by the fact that they signed a ton of kids. UGA had the smallest signing class in the SEC. According to ESPN, we had nine 4 Star recruits, which is pretty solid for a class like this one.Don't play Chicken Little if you're a Dawg fan. We've seen the biggest change of staff since CMR has been here this offseason after having the worst year of his tenure here. Things will be better this year, and signing day will be «sexier» for those of you who need it next year.
Damon Evans gets a new contract
Under the new deal, UGA President Michael Adams said Evans will be paid a $550,000 salary starting on July 1, with annual $20,000 increases on that date each year. His salary will reach $630,000 in the final year of the new contract. In addition, Evans will receive a longevity bonus of $250,000 if he remains in the position for the full five years on the new contract. He'll get a $100,000 longevity bonus due from the previous contract on July 1 this year.
Run The Damn Ball echos the opinions of most observers of this class
All I care about is how we coach these kids. We always finish high in recruiting. I understand and appreciate the importance of landing great prospects..but geez. Pick the best kids you can find and let's get them in class and on the practice field already.
Every year we have good talent on the field and sidelines. When can we get the best out of that talent with the best possible coaching? That's my question.
Teach 'em how to take care of the ball. How to block. How to tackle. How to hand the ball to the ref after a touchdown. How to not commit stupid penalties. This is the year of coaching...not recruiting.
Good college-football teams tend to stay good, and also to recruit well. But that doesn't mean one causes the other. Surely the talent of incoming players is important, but so are facilities, other attributes of a university that are attractive — such as climate and convenience — and coaching (emphasis added). Those factors likely help top programs recruit, and also get the most out of their recruits.
