Buck Likes Steele
Buck Belue has endorsed several candidates for the open defensive coordinator job in the past few days. The latest being Kevin Steele, Clemson's current coordinator. It seems that former UGA coach Jim Donnan mentioned Steele as a candidate on Belue's radio show yesterday. Buck says:
This would be a good hire for Richt. This guy has coached for Tom Osborne, Bobby Bowden, Johnny Majors and Nick Saban. He's got head coaching experience (Baylor). He's got a reputation of being a good recruiter (effective in his home state of South Carolina) and a good teacher (he coaches LBs). Steele is legit.
That price tag probably looks steep from Damon Evans office, however. And that concerns me. Making this guy jump, after only 1 year at Clemson, will take a big offer...it might take a 3-year contract of $400,000 a year to make it happen. But this guy would be worth that number.
I've never really understood the philosophy on assistant coaches at Georgia under Coach Dooley and now, Damon Evans. Give'm 1-year contracts, work the heck out of them, and hope the thought of the unemployment line at the end of the year keep them motivated. But make no mistake, this is not 1984. These days, to keep up with best in CF you've got to pay up. And Georgia has plenty of money. Pay the man. And pay the other 2 assistants on defense.
