espn.com reports vic koenning will land in illinois after changing mind twice
David Hale writes that an offer was made to Keonning by UGA on Thursday.
Thursday, however, an offer finally came from Georgia, which was Koenning's first choice and the preferred destination of his family. So now, what we're left with is this: Koenning has offers from both Georgia and Illinois, and while Athens was indeed the preferred destination, there are repercussions to backing out on what was at least an implied agreement with Illinois.
So… what happens from here?
That, I don't know yet, but an answer is likely to come from Koenning soon. And as Georgia Sports Blog wrote, his qualifications are certainly worthy of the job. Still, the temperature of the room among fans seems to be a luke warm on this at best. So, what say you? Would you get behind a Koenning hire? Or is this not enough of a departure from Willie Martinez for your liking?
Koenning also has talked with Georgia about its DC opening, and by some accounts Georgia's interest in him went from tepid to torrid on Thursday.
Rumors were flying for a while Thursday night, intensifying with an 8:45 p.m. Twitter post by ESPN's Joe Schad that Koenning «now close to deal to become Georgia's DC, changing from Illinois» and seemingly fizzling with a 10:02 p.m. tweet by Schad that «ESPN.com reports Vic Koenning will land in Illinois after changing mind twice.»
What we know for sure at this point is that Illinois has a press conference scheduled for today -– and Georgia doesn't.
Anyway, I should probably wrap up this post by answering the question some of you might be asking: Who's Vic Koenning? He's Kansas State's co-defensive coordinator and formerly the defensive coordinator at Clemson and Troy, and before all of that he was head coach at Wyoming. His last name, by the way, is pronounced CONE-ing.
Bernie's thoughts on the matter:
- I think this makes it official that Smart is off of CMRs radar.
- I would surmise that the Koenning offer from UGA would be in the same ballpark as the Illinois offer. Otherwise it would be easier for Coach Koenning to go back on his word.
- But these things usually go pretty quietly until both parties agree to agree.
- As I pointed out earlier, I'm not sold on Koenning. He did some good things at Clemson. However, PWD builds a compelling case for the guy.
- The numbers don't lie. Koenning has gotten it done in the places he's been. But from what I've seen he's similar to Coach Willie with better results.
- A point can be made that with better tackling, coverage...overall enthusiasm...Martinez's scheme could work consistently. It did during the Van Gorder years.
- All that being said, what worries me most is that the Dawg Nation is pissing their pants something fierce. They're so distraught embarrassed distracted by the fact that Van Gorder, Muschamp and Smart aren't coming that whoever is hired will be debunked before the Butts-Mehre mic is turned on.
- So if Koenning pulls a Mason on the Zooker today...count me as one of the ones very proud of Coach Richt.

What a ridiculous exchange of mis-information. Or, could it be dis-information?
Twittering should be left to the professionals...you know, girls in the 9th grade. Jeez.
